Welcome to the Garage Creative!

What is The Garage Creative? A grassroots movement to keep kids curious and the natural inventors they are. But honestly we do not really know yet and I think that is what is so exciting about this project. While we may not know where this is going to take us, if anywhere, there are some things we do know.

Kids are creative. Give them a task and they can come up with a million different inventive solutions to the problem.

Kids and teachers are busy while they are in school. I think sometimes, at no fault of the teacher, time to allow for kids to be creative can be lacking.

In my close to seven years working in informal science education I am always amazed that when I tell students they can use whatever it is they want to build a boat, their eyes light up. Often times the materials they select to use are items that I have brought from home instead of recycling (egg cartons, empty milk containers, Trader Joe’s coffee tins).

We want this site to serve as a resource for folks who like us, want to continue the creative processes going while our children are not in school. We are going to host Garage Creative Events in our Garage and share them with the world. We hope the world will then in turn, participate with us with these events and we can create a global community. We will provide the content, the how to, and what will be needed for these. I would also like to have Google hangouts with our ga-venters ( it is cheesy but think garage inventers and I think kids will really like it!) so they can meet people from different areas.

But why the garage? One word, Apple. Can you imagine what would have happened if Steve Jobs had been given a garage when he was five? Or worse, not given a garage?

There are of course other reasons. Earlier this year, we held a shark dissection (which you can see on our facebook page) and invited folks from around the neighborhood. It had a very community oriented feel to it, which just happens to be another goal of our venture, to involve our community in family discovery. Another reason for the garage is it is a place to get messy! Finally, it already has all the tools needed for us to ga-vent.

That is all for now. We are going to begin the process, which will be documented, of turning our regular garage into one that inspires creativity. We will show you what we use, how we do it, and all the amazing things we come up with. We hope you will join us!

Peace and love,

The Garage Creative

  1. I wish your garage was closer to mine...you know one block away like it used to be. I guess your virtual garage will have to do. Love it!
